PRIMEUR Gramma dejongi

A.Z.A.C. heeft de enige echte primeur gehad met de Gramma dejongi. In ons maandblad nummer van september 2009 hadden wij deze nieuwe soort al op onze cover staan! Toen werden nog voldoende holotypes verzameld voor een correcte naamgeving. Toch spraken wij toen al over een (Lipo)Gramma dejongi. Tevens maakte wij bekend dat er nog een onbekende Gramma soort bestaat die ooit Gramma sprungi zal gaan heten. Deze nog steeds onbeschreven soort is ontdekt door Julian Sprung. Na enkele gesprekken met Julian Sprung en A.Z.A.C. in augustus mailde hij ons het volgende door over zijn ontdekte Gramma soort en over de nu bekende Gramma dejongi:

… The Gramma is beautiful and it generates some questions! If De Jong has that at Interzoo I'm sure it will generate a lot of excitement. You probably know that the amount of yellow versus magenta in Gramma loreto varies depending on where they occur. Some places the body is mostly yellow, with a magenta head, other places the body is mostly magenta, with a yellow tail. This new fish carries the variation to a new extreme. It may just be Gramma loreto, but of course it may be a new species, or, more intriguing, it may be a hybrid of Gramma loreto with something that has so far not been seen. or... you haven't crossed Gramma loreto with Assessor flavissimus have you? I don't know if I mentioned it to you, but about 18 years ago I found a new Gramma species from Brazil. As you know the Brazilian Gramma is not Gramma loreto, but what is not known is that there is also a Brazilian blackcap basslet that is not Gramma melacara. It has a short body more like Gramma lincki, but it has the purple of elacara, and a whitish tail. So far it has not been described, and there was only one specimen collected. I sent it to Richard Pyle in Hawaii back then and he may have lost the specimen. I don't recall whether Jack Randall had a chance to see it. Fortunately I took photos of it.
